"Billy Joel Might Play The Valley This Year"
Joel's Agent Has Been In Contact With The Idaho Center & Taco Bell Arena

By: Michael Deeds
(July 14th, 2007)

Remember the Billy Joel song that goes, "You may be wrong, but you may be right?"

Consider this next sentence in that context: Joel will perform in the Treasure Valley in 2007.

Why make such a crazy prognostication? Because the "Piano Man"'s agent has been communicating with both Taco Bell Arena and the Idaho Center about a possible fall concert.

"We have been contacted by them," said Lisa Cochran, marketing director for Taco Bell Arena. "We're just not able to confirm anything at this point."

Craig Baltzer, general manager for the Idaho Center, said, "I have talked to (the agent), and we're working on a date for a show, but nothing is confirmed."

Confirmed, conshwirmed.

Chris Moore, senior vice-president at Boise promoter Bravo Entertainment, provided the most, uh, definite information.

"They are definitely considering playing Boise," Moore said.

Yes!

"But it's definitely not for certain," he added.

No!

The only thing fans can take to the bank is this: If Joel makes his Idaho debut, the concert almost undoubtedly will sell-out in a flash.

A member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Joel has notched more than 30 Top 40 hits and sold in excess of 150 million albums worldwide.

"Billy Joel's Music To Play at Nunley's Carousel"
By: Emily Dooley
(July 16th, 2007)

When singer and songwriter Billy Joel was a child, riding the horses of Nunley's Carousel was a favorite childhood ritual.

It so captivated him that as an adult Joel composed "Waltz No. 1, Op. 2," subtitled "Nunley's Carousel."

Now, the historic carousel, built in 1912, is getting a face lift. Restoration on the ride will begin next month.

And when the carousel settles into its future home along Museum Row at Mitchel Field, Joel's song will be the one riders hear.

It's all thanks to Rachel Obergh, 9, of Wantagh, who founded "Pennies For Ponies," a nonprofit group started two years to help pay for the restoration.

Obergh knew about Joel's composition and sent him a note, asking if it could be played when the carousel opens again in fall 2008.

Ever the Long Island fan, Joel agreed and arranged for his keyboard player David Rosenthal to record the composition with organ-like instrumentation.

The animals, organ, motor and other parts of the carousel have been in storage for nine years, but next month the largest manufacturer of wooden merry-go-rounds will begin restoring the ride, which first operated in Brooklyn before moving to Nunley's amusement park in Baldwin where it charmed kids and adults for 55 years. The county purchased the ride for $854,400 in 1998.

The restoration is being paid for with $420,000 from discretionary capital funds controlled by Nassau Legislator, Joseph Scannell (D-Baldwin), along with money raised by "Pennies For Ponies." Thusfar, 28 of 42 carousel animals have been adopted for $2,000.

"Katie Lee, Caterer (Sort of?): Billy Joel's Wife Is Saucy Young Thing"
By: Spencer Morgan
(July 31st, 2007)

Celebrities are not ashamed to enjoy the smooth and easy stylings of Dave Matthews! Famous faces paying $3000 for Mr. Matthews' show in East Hampton on Saturday, July 28th, 2007, the second concert in the Hampton Social @ Ross series, included comic actor Adam Sandler, actress/singer Mandy Moore, and "Sopranos" stars Edie Falco and Aida Turturro. "Edie even took off her shoes and was dancing," said an attendee. Also present? Soft-rocker Billy Joel, 58, and his wife, Katie Lee Joel, 26.

The Joels were there in part to scout the venue: Mr. Joel will be performing as part of the same series on Saturday, August 4th, 2007, and Mrs. Joel, a culinary personality who has appeared on "Top Chef," is in the process of designing a dinner menu for the sold-out crowd.

"While she was there she was coming up with some fun menu ideas," said the source. "She was like, 'Maybe I'll make some of Billy's favorite desserts.'"

Apparently Mr. Joel is a man of considerable appetites. A working menu for the evening exclusively obtained by the Transom includes five desserts - banana pudding, peach cobbler, chocolate & peanut butter cake, strawberry shortcake, and red-velvet cupcakes with cream cheese frosting - five cold appetizers and five hot, three entrees (including "Billy's Marinated Skirt Steaks" - Slurp!), four side dishes and two kinds of bread.

Ms. Joel, however, will be free to enjoy her husband's performance; she only oversees the menu. Caterer Robbins Wolffe will prepare the food.
