"Alexa Ray Joel, Daughter of Billy Joel, Christie Brinkley, In Hospital After Pill Overdose Suicide Attempt"
By: George Rush, Wil Cruz, Rocco Parascandola, & Rich Schapiro
(December 5th, 2009)

Alexa Ray Joel, the daughter of Billy Joel and Christie Brinkley, tried to kill herself by downing a handful of sleeping pills Saturday and was rushed to a Manhattan hospital, sources said.

Joel, 23, was taken to St. Vincent's Medical Center after paramedics responded about 12:30pm to a 911 call from her West Village apartment, a police source said.

Fire Department officials said she told medics she had taken eight pills and was having trouble breathing.

"She is stable," said Claire Mercuri, Alexa Ray's publicist, hours after she arrived at the hospital."

Two law enforcement sources said the overdose appeared to be intentional, though a person close to Alexa Ray said she only ingested a homeopathic antihistamine called Traumeel.

Brinkley, in a blue rain coat, swept into the hospital about 4:20pm. Alexa Ray was released a few hours later, a source said. It was not clear where she was taken.

Billy Joel remained in his Long Island home, a friend said. "Billy didn't go so it didn't become a circus atmosphere. He was in constant phone contact."

Alexa Ray is the only daughter of Joel and Brinkley, whose nine-year marriage ended in divorce in 1994.

A source said Alexa has been an emotional wreck since breaking-up with her boyfriend, ex-bandmate Jimmy Riot, years ago.

"She has battled depression," the source said. "She had a rough break-up with a boyfriend, a musician in her band, several years ago. It was her first love."

A family friend said Brinkley's ugly split with ex-husband Peter Cook and Joel's marriage with a woman "almost her own age" took a heavy toll on Alexa Ray.

Her own break-up added another layer of stress to the aspiring singer who has struggled living "in the shadow of two famous parents," the friend said. "Alexa has some emotional issues."

This may be a cry for help," the friend said. "Christie loves Alexa, but she can be tough on her. She's always on her about being overweight."

Added the family friend: "Her mother was a supermodel. Her father is one of the biggest pop-stars in America. She's trying to find her place in the world."

After dropping out of New York University, Alexa Ray launched a singing career and was scheduled to perform twice in Manhattan on Thursday - at J&R Music World and the New York Stock Exchange tree lighting.

Her latest single is called "Invisible," which her web-site says "tells the story of disappointment over losing love and self-esteem and finding female empowerment."

In an August posting on her MySpace page, she listed her mood as "forgotten" and complained about her love life. "I don't like dating!!! Wish I could be in a relationship again without having to date," she wrote.

"I HATE going out!! I'm a homebody and a workaholic... I don't like going out and drinking to meet men!!! I always have to drag myself out the door to get up the motivation to go out, and when I do go out, I don't meet anybody!!!"

She continued, "I live in the greatest city in the world and I can't seem to meet an interesting guy who also happens to be NICE."

Long before he became a famous musician, a 21 year-old Billy Joel swallowed furniture polish in a bid to off himself.

"I was suicidal," Joel told Details magazine last year.

"I was 21. It's a tough age. Things hit you really hard. A relationship with a girl had ended and I was devastated, and then it didn't work out with the recording we did, and I just figured the world didn't need another failed musician.

"You take yourself so seriously - you've got your head so far up your ass you can't see straight."

"Alexa Ray Joel Released From Manhattan Hospital"
(December 6th, 2009)

Alexa Ray Joel, the daughter of pop-singer Billy Joel and supermodel Christie Brinkley, has been released from a Manhattan hospital after being rushed there Saturday afternoon for treatment of an overdose of pills.

Two sources close to the family said Sunday Joel had taken Traumeel, an antihistamine. Authorities had yet to confirm what medication she had ingested.

Claire Mercuri, Joel's publicist, confirmed that Joel was released from St. Vincent's Hospital in Manhattan a few hours after being admitted. Mercuri declined to comment further.

New York City police said Sunday they are no longer investigating the case and criminal charges are unlikely.

"On our end, that's it," said Detective Marc Nell, Sunday morning.

Law enforcement sources said they responded to a report of a suicidal female at Alexa Ray Joel's Greenwich Village apartment yesterday.

Joel told Newsday, Saturday, that he was deeply shaken but that his daughter was never in any danger because she got to a hospital quickly.

"She is going to be fine," said Joel, who lives in Sag Harbor, New York.

Alexa Ray Joel, 23, swallowed eight pills, The Associated Press reported.

Billy Joel said his daughter was with her mother, Christie Brinkley, Joel's ex-wife.

Joel and Brinkley planned yesterday to move their daughter to another facility, law enforcement sources told Newsday.

Police received a call about a suicidal female at Joel's address on Bethune Street in Greenwich Village, the law enforcement sources said. Joel's roommate called police just before 12:30pm, according to media reports.

Joel was conscious when police arrived and said she was despondent over breaking-up with her boyfriend, the sources said. The sources said the pills she took did not belong to her.

Joel did not take the drugs intentionally, said one person who spoke on condition of anonymity. Joel had been in good spirits as recently as Friday and was looking forward to performing in New York City this week, the source said.

Another source, however, said Joel did seem upset over a break-up with her boyfriend. Joel had dated Jimmy Riot, who plays bass in her band.

In a July 2009 interview, Joel said, "I broke up with my boyfriend, who was also my bass player, and moved out of our place, which was like my refuge. That all left me struggling with my identity, which I think a lot of young women can relate to."

Joel lives in a redbrick walk-up on a quiet West Village block. The buzzer to her apartment says "Joel." About a half-dozen detectives were in the apartment last night and later left.

Two women came to the apartment, then left without speaking to reporters. A man and woman also went to the apartment but did not speak to media. The man left holding a small dog and went to a building a few blocks away.

Joel posted on her Facebook page late Friday that she was giving two free concerts in Manhattan Thursday and signing autographs. "Hope to see you all soon! xoxo," she wrote.

"Alexa Ray Joel Out of Hospital, Back With Dad"
(December 7th, 2009)

Alexa Ray Joel, the daughter of pop icon Billy Joel and supermodel Christie Brinkley, was back with her father yesterday after being rushed to a hospital for treatment of an overdose of pills that sources close to the family said was an herbal medication.

Two sources close to the family said yesterday that Alexa Joel, 23, had taken Traumeel, a homeopathic anti-inflammatory often used to treat pain and stiffness. Authorities declined to confirm what medication she had ingested.

Claire Mercuri, Alexa Joel's publicist, confirmed that she was released from St. Vincent's Hospital Manhattan a few hours after being admitted on Saturday and declined to comment further.

Law enforcement sources had said New York City Police responded to a report of a suicidal female at Alexa Ray Joel's Greenwich Village apartment on Saturday. But yesterday, the NYPD said it was no longer investigating the case, and that criminal charges are unlikely, police said.

Alexa Joel's release from the hospital came as a relief to residents in Sag Harbor, the East End village where she spent much of her childhood. "She's a very talented singer...I think she's going to be fine," said Jim Turner, a local guitarist, as he walked down Main Street.

Arnold Leo, an East Hampton resident who said he's known Joel's parents for more than 20 years, said, "I'm sure Billy and Christie are very concerned about their daughter, and I'm sure they're doing everything appropriate to be supportive of her."

Billy Joel told Newsday on Saturday night that he was shaken but his daughter was never in any danger because she got to a hospital quickly. Alexa Joel swallowed eight pills, The Associated Press reported.

A source told Newsday on Saturday that Alexa Joel seemed upset over a break-up with her live-in boyfriend, Jimmy Riot, who plays bass in her band. She is a singer, songwriter, and pianist who has performed on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" and on the "Wendy Williams Show."

In a July 2009 interview, Alexa Joel said the break-up had left her "struggling with my identity."

Alexa Joel lives in a West Village walk-up, where the buzzer to her apartment says "Joel." Around 11:30am yesterday, a man climbed the steps and dropped off a yellow bag, then left without talking to reporters.

"Alexa Ray Joel Staying With Dad After Pill Scare"
(December 7th, 2009)

A publicist says the daughter of Billy Joel and Christie Brinkley is staying with her father two days after being treated in New York for a possible overdose of pills. Alexa Ray Joel's publicist Claire Mercuri won't say where the 23 year-old is staying. Billy Joel has homes in Manhattan and on eastern Long Island.

His daughter was hospitalized for several hours Saturday after police received a 911 call saying she had taken several pills.

Police say it is not clear whether she accidentally overdosed or attempted suicide.

On her MySpace page, Joel says she attended New York University for a short time before dropping out to focus on her music career.

"Alexa Ray Joel's Ex-Boyfriend Jimmy Riot Doesn't Know How She's Doing After She Nearly Overdosed On Pills"
By: George Rush, Edgar Sandoval, & Elizabeth Hays
(December 7th, 2009)

He's the rocker who broke Alexa Ray Joel's heart - but he insisted Sunday he didn't know how she was doing a day after cops said she nearly overdosed on pills.

Alexa Ray, 23, the daughter of singer Billy Joel and supermodel Christie Brinkley, appeared to be trying to get the attention of rocker ex-boyfriend Jimmy Riot when she guzzled pills Saturday.

Joel panicked and called 911 when she started having trouble breathing in her West Village apartment, a family friend said Sunday.

"It was a cry for attention," said the friend. "She scared herself."

Asked about the near-overdose, Riot, 38, said he hadn't been in touch with his former girlfriend and band member.

"I don't know how she's doing," said Riot, a hard-rock bassist who played in the budding musician's self-named band and even produced her 2007 record "Sketches" before the two parted ways almost a year ago.

Riot, whose real name is James Elliott, looked distraught as he rushed past a reporter with his wool hat pull down tightly over his head.

He declined to discuss the break-up, which sources said sparked Alexa Ray's descent into depression.

"I respect Alexa's and her family's right to privacy," said Riot, who also plays in his own "art-metal" band called "Torture Sermon."

Alexa Ray was taken to St. Vincent's Hospital Manhattan about 12:30pm, Saturday. She was released several hours later.

"She'll be fine," said a source. "Christie visited her last night. Billy is with her right now."

A source identified the pills that Alexa Ray took as Traumeel, a homeopathic anti-inflammatory she uses for allergies, and not sleeping pills as was first thought.

Medical experts said it would be nearly impossible to overdose on the natural meds.

"I don't even think the kid has a sleeping pill in her house," said the source.

Claire Mercuri, a spokeswoman for Billy Joel and Alexa Ray, declined to comment Sunday.

Family friends said Alexa Ray and Riot dated for "several years" and that Alexa was attracted to him because he was older.

"I think she looked up to him," said a friend, adding that the breakup still weighed on Alexa almost a year later.

"She was coming up on the first anniversary of their breakup," added the friend. "I don't think they talk that much nowadays, but she still thinks about him."

Alexa Ray's famous parents stayed out of sight Sunday, but Brinkley's ex-husband Peter Cook said he hopes Alexa Ray's doing better.

"I just wish her well," he said. "Kids are important to all of us. They're the most precious thing."

"Alexa Ray Joel Cancels Performance at The New York Stock Exchange"
By: Samuel Goldsmith
(December 7th, 2009)

Troubled songstress Alexa Ray Joel is skipping her scheduled performance at the New York Stock Exchange this week after a failed suicide attempt, the Daily News has learned.

The daughter of Billy Joel and Christie Brinkley was set to headline the New York Stock Exchange's 86th annual tree lighting ceremony, Thursday, just five days after she was rushed to the hospital for overdosing on homeopathic allergy pills.

She is also scheduled to perform at J&R Music World Thursday, but there's no word yet on whether that gig is also scarpped.

Alexa Ray Joel, 23, apparently popped the pills because she was still upset about her break-up with her rocker ex-boyfriend, Jimmy Riot.

She panicked and called 911 on Saturday when she started having trouble breathing.

Medical experts say it would be nearly impossible to overdose on the all-natural Traumeel anti-inflammatory drugs she guzzled.

Alexa Ray Joel's absence at the tree lighting ceremony makes the Monsignor Donovan Choir and 22 year-old singer/songwriter Kate Voegele the main attractions at the event.

"Billy Joel's Daughter 'Feeling Much Better'"
(December 7th, 2009)

Alexa Ray Joel, daughter of Billy Joel, is home from the hospital and "feeling much better," a representative tells TMZ.

Alexa was rushed to the hospital this weekend after authorities received a 911 call from her Manhattan apartment.

But her representative tells us, "She is with her family and looking forward to getting back on track."

Alexa herself added, "I want to thank everyone for their outpouring of love and support."

The representative also said it was Alexa that called 911 and not a roommate as some outlets had reported.

"Billy Joel Says Alexa Had 'Devastating Heartbreak'"
(December 7th, 2009)

Pop star Billy Joel and supermodel Christie Brinkley say their daughter is trying to recover from her "dangerous actions" of last weekend, when New York City police received an emergency call about Alexa Ray Joel.

In a statement released Wednesday, Joel and Brinkley say their daughter's actions came "while suffering a devastating heartbreak." The statement didn't specify what her actions were.

Joel and Brinkley also say a report published Tuesday in the New York Post was "false." The Post reported the 23 year-old attempted suicide after a fight with her mother during a family vacation.

A spokeswoman for the Post didn't immediately comment.

A publicist for Alexa Ray Joel said this week she was feeling better and was with family.

"Billy Joel & Christie Brinkley Issue A Statement On Alexa Ray Joel"
(December 10th, 2009)

In light of some media coverage of their daughter Alexa Ray Joel's recent hospital stay, her parents, Billy Joel and Christie Brinkley, have issued the following statement. In its entirety, it reads:

Every parent can imagine the pain and anguish we face as parents of a daughter who is working to recover from the dangerous actions she took while suffering a devastating heartbreak. As much as we hate dignifying tabloid stories with a response, we feel we must set the record straight to protect our family.

The story that ran in the New York Post on December 8th, 2009, and has been subsequently spread across the internet, is filled with vicious lies and attempts to smear our character and that of our beloved daughter. We ask the public and legitimate media outlets to please "consider the source" and to not further exacerbate our daughter's situation by repeating and legitimizing these false reports.

With Much Appreciation,
Billy Joel & Christie Brinkley

"Billy Joel's & Christie Brinkley's Kid Now Upbeat"
By: Todd Venezia
(December 24th, 2009)

Alexa Ray Joel is smiling once again.

Just two weeks after her scary overdose, Billy Joel's daughter was spotted enjoying life again after a holiday lunch with her mom, Christie Brinkley, and grandmother in the Hamptons this week.

The three generations were bundled up to face the bitterly cold weather after a meal at the American Hotel in Sag Harbor, New York on Tuesday.

Supermodel mom Christie couldn't look happier as she watched Alexa hug grandma Marge Brinkley.

Afterward, the trio went to see "Avatar" at a theatre in East Hampton, New York.

Alexa made headlines on December 5th, 2009, when she took eight pills at a her home on Bethune Street in the West Village. She was rushed to St. Vincent's Hospital, although it turned out her life was never in any serious danger.

In the months before the overdose, Alexa had been through a series of bad break-ups with her former boyfriend, musician Jimmy Riot.

Alexa, 23, is the namesake of her dad's hit song "The Downeaster Alexa."

She has been a songwriter since her early teens, and recently dropped out of New York University to focus full-time on her music career.

This year, she released a new single, "Invisible," and had been scheduled to perform at the New York Stock Exchange's yearly Christmas tree lighting.
