"Billy Joel to Rock Again, In a Tour With Elton"
By: Mitchell Fink
(November 8th, 2000)

So much for Billy Joel's retirement from rock tours.

The "Piano Man," who had said he was turning the corner to devote more time to composing classical music, is going back on the road with Elton John.

The two artists have worked together extensively in the past, and sources say a tour is being put together. Joel and John will start out on the West Coast in February and then work their way east; the tentative plan is for them to be in the New York City area by April.

What a short-term memory Joel has. It was he who stated two years ago: "I just don't want to do long tours, the kind that go on for months. ...I've been playing rock and roll for 30 years. It's time to move on musically and challenge myself as an artist."

Then came the millennium concert at Madison Square Garden and the further pronouncement: "I'm 50 years-old. It's the millennium. I just got inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. How am I gonna top that? Where do I go from here? The moon?"

Perhaps nothing that grand, but the two artists are working out their respective calendars and penciling in preferred dates and cities as we speak. A rep for Joel confirmed only that the tour is "still in the discussion stage and a schedule is in the works." Elton's rep could not be reached for comment.

"Billy Joel And Elton John Out Of Retirement And Onto The Tour Bus?"

Two guys who have announced their separate retirements from touring and music, Billy Joel and Elton John seem to have changed their minds. They are reportedly discussing a co-headlining tour for next year.

A spokesperson for Joel told "Launch" that the tour is "in the discussion stage, but nothing is confirmed. Hopefully they will work out the schedules and it will happen." A spokesperson for John also confirmed that "a tour is currently being discussed." The two piano men have toured extensively together in the past. They hope to kick off the tour on the West Coast in February and swing back around to New York near April, the New York Daily News reports.

To refresh memories, it was Joel who said two years ago, "I just don't want to do long tours, the kind that go on for months... I've been playing rock and roll for 30 years. It's time to move on musically and challenge myself as an artist."

John's retirement announcement was even more recent: He proclaimed, then retracted, his plans to stop working within a day at New York's Madison Square Garden last month.

"Joel - John Encore In The Works"

The Piano Man may be playing us another song sooner than previously expected.

Though Billy Joel continues to concentrate on his classical music compositions, his publicist said this week that the Hicksville native is in discussions to tour again with Elton John.

If finalized, the tour would be similar to 1998's "Face 2 Face" tour, which featured Joel and John onstage separately and together playing their hits in arenas. The tour could begin as soon as mid-January.

"He isn't coming out of retirement, because he isn't retired," Columbia Records publicist Claire Mercuri said. "He never said he was retiring. That's media spin. He said he wanted to focus on his classical compositions, which is what he's doing." Mercuri said Joel has sworn off massive, 18-month worldwide tours.

"He's focusing on composing, but if (he) gets the inspiration to write a rock and roll song, he's going to write it," she said.

However, even after being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last year, Joel said he hasn't been inspired to write rock songs for a while.

"The way I feel now, the lyrics just get in the way of the music," he said before the induction.

Has Billy Joel finally found a cold spring harbor deep enough for his boat? Now that he's sold his East Hampton house to Jerry Seinfeld for $32 million, sources say, he's close to buying an $8.9 million place on Robertson Drive in North Haven, north of the Montauk Highway. "He's not looking for a trophy house," says one broker. "He's already had that." The Robertson Drive place is a 1955 house with two master bedrooms and a pool on five and a half acres, with a big deep-water dock that has a seven-foot draw. "He's looking for the best harbor he can buy," says the broker. But the owners shouldn't pack up yet: This fall, Joel changed his mind on the $14 million Marshlands estate in Southampton that features a dock directly underneath the house, and he doesn't seem to be commitment-minded. "Maybe he should buy Gardiners Island," joked a broker.

"Elton John, Billy Joel Map Out Joint North American Trek"
By: David Basham
(November 23rd, 2000)

During New York show last month, John told audience he might retire after issuing another studio album, touring with Joel.

Legendary rock and roll piano men Billy Joel and Elton John will re-team early next year for another edition of their joint "Face 2 Face" tour, with the initial leg of the 2001 outing slated to kickoff January 19th, 2001 in San Diego, California.

Joel and John originally toured the US together in 1995 and '96, then they took the their trek overseas two year later, for swings through Europe, Japan, Australia and New Zealand.

Joel made a guest appearance at a pair of Elton John concerts at Madison Square Garden in New York in October, trading verses on a rendition of "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" that was captured for John's new live album, "One Night Only," which was released Tuesday.

During the first New York show last month, John told the audience that he might retire after issuing another studio album and touring with Joel, although he backed off the comments at the show the following evening.

No firm decision has been made to determine how long the 2001 "Face 2 Face" Tour will last, although there will be more dates added to the just-announced itinerary, according to Elton John publicist Fran Curtis.
